Sunday scrimmage roundup

The Trojans ended their first week of Rose Bowl preparations on Sunday with an intrasquad scrimmage, which the coaches used primarily as a way to evaluate players for next season. Former Arkansas teammates Mitch Mustain and Damian Williams (each sitting out this season under NCAA transfer rules and thus unable to practice with the team for the remainder of the year) provided many of the day’s highlights, with Mustain completing 10-of-16 passes for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Williams catching 5 passes for 58 yards and a score. Freshman running back Marc Tyler gained 78 yards in 7 carries. Many first-stringers on both sides of the ball made token appearances, and several players nursing minor injuries or illnesses (including tailback Chauncey Washington and receivers Patrick Turner and David Ausberry) sat out completely.

USC will enter the next phase of Rose Bowl work at the end of the week, when they practice at the Home Depot Center on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. During that time they will stay at a hotel in Santa Monica.

  1. Mustain! Mustain! Mustain!

I went to the scrimmage on sunday and all I can say is that I’m a Mustain believer. I will have to give Scott Wolf some props on this board and say that he was right to pump up Mustain… he is the best quarterback on the team… yes, he is better than Booty…. and better than Sanchez.

One caveat… he will need Damian Williams to start at one wide receiver position… which won’t be hard as I don’t think Turner will be the man if he keeps dropping passes like he did this year
