Sunday basketball notes: Past, present, and future
USC announced on Sunday that former walk-on basketball player (and current USC senior) Reed Doucette was named a winner of a 2008 Rhodes Scholarship, becoming the fourth Trojan student-athlete in history to do so.
As for the current Trojans, they are back in Los Angeles for a few days of preparations leading up to a weekend tournament in Anaheim that will see USC play three games beginning Thursday night. There is still no word on when highly-touted freshman forward Davon Jefferson might make his USC debut, but coach Tim Floyd indicated that “He’s got a long way to go conditioning-wise and in every other area.”
Monday will see the team securing another piece of its future when one of the nation’s top recruits, swingman Demar DeRozan, will officially announce his USC commitment (and signing) at a press conference at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, accompanied by fellow Trojan recruit Romeo Miller. The LA Times reports that the latter will now receive a scholarship for at least one year, rather than come to the school as a walk-on, as previously announced.

Yeah, I figured Romeo’s pride wouldn’t allow him to join the team as a walk-on. It’s all about status - not the team.
