Recap: (12) USC 24, (24) Cal 17
It was a dark and stormy night at Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium on Saturday (well, maybe just stormy), but the twelfth-ranked Trojans (8-2, 5-2) were able to hold onto a slippery ball long enough to outlast No. 24 California (6-3, 3-4) by a touchdown, 24-17. USC utilized a timely defense and a career-best performance by senior running back Chauncey Washington to keep their BCS bowl game hopes alive with two games left to play.
As always, we recap the storylines of the game, update you on the latest injuries, and roundup the game coverage in all of the major publications:
Storylines
- On an evening when USC’s passing game failed to generate much offense, Washington ran for a career-high 220 yards and one touchdown, at times seeming to carry the team single-handedly. His previous best was 119 yards.
- QB John David Booty accounted for just 129 yards on 11-of-20 passing, and didn’t do much to improve on last week’s unimpressive return. Although he didn’t throw an interception, Booty did fumble several snaps–no doubt thanks to the steady rain that fell without pause throughout the contest.
- The game was tied at 17 early in the fourth quarter when the Trojans marched 96 yards downfield for the decisive score, their 10-play drive capped by a short Stafon Johnson touchdown run. Johnson, however, gained just nine yards on seven carries, with Washington (understandably) getting the bulk of the action at tailback.
- USC’s receivers were invisible for much of the evening, with Vidal Hazelton grabbing four passes for just 50 yards, and Patrick Turner getting his only reception late in the game (albeit at a crucial moment).
- The Trojans were outgained on the evening, 399-368, with the defense unable to get any pressure on Cal QB Nate Longshore and USC surrendering 164 yards rushing to Justin Forsett. However, the defense came through with big stops when they were needed, including limiting the Bears to three points when they had a first-and-goal from the two yard line. The biggest play of the game, however, was Terrell Thomas‘ interception late in the fourth quarter as the Bears were driving deep into USC territory in an attempt to tie the game.
- USC’s special teams unit was able to avoid any long punt returns by DeSean Jackson (he had just one return, for no yards). Even better, Ronald Johnson continued to show improvement as the Trojans’ primary kickoff returner, averaging over 25 yards per return and taking one kick for 41 yards.
- The Bears wore throwback jerseys in honor of their 1975 team, joining the Washington Huskies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish in falling to the Trojans this year while wearing alternate uniforms.
Injury updates
- For a change, the Trojans did not sustain any major injuries during the game. Linebacker Keith Rivers sat out several series after tweaking his ankle, but he returned later in the game. He is expected to undergo X-rays on Sunday as a precaution.
- As expected, LT Sam Baker did not play. Coaches are hoping he can return for the Arizona State game.
