Tuesday notes: Still no QB decision

Former USC wideout Johnnie Morton was in attendance as the Trojans spent another day under smoke-filled skies preparing for Saturday’s matchup of top-ten teams in Oregon. Nothing changed on the quarterback front, meaning that (a) no decision was made about the starter, and (b) it still looks like it’s Mark Sanchez’s job for now. Here are the details:

  • John David Booty participated in practice and threw without a protective glove for the first time since breaking his finger. Although his passes early in the session looked good, he struggled a bit as the afternoon progressed (which may simply be a factor of adjusting to throwing without a glove, although he was also lacking velocity), and still reports a little pain in the finger. The bigger test will come Wednesday, when he will find out if Tuesday’s activity caused any swelling of worsening of the injury. Sanchez continued to take most of the first-team snaps.
  • OG Chilo Rachal’s comeback took a slight detour on Tuesday when he was forced to miss most of practice due to problems with his calf (but not his injured knee). Coaches didn’t feel that the incident was a real setback, however, and Rachal is still expected to play on Saturday.
  • OT Sam Baker also tested the comeback waters with a few reps during practice, but the Trojan staff still doesn’t have any idea of when he may return, and it seems unlikely that he will play against Oregon.
  • As for the other recovering linemen, there was good news and bad news on Tuesday. Zack Heberer and Charles Brown were both able to practice, Kris O’Dowd wasn’t, and Thomas Herring may have re-injured his ankle.
  • During his weekly press conference, Pete Carroll had this to say about the Ducks: “This might be the most productive, the best offense that we’ve played since we’ve been here.”
