Tuesday notes: Booty throws, could play Saturday

What’s the status of USC’s many injured players, you ask? We have the latest details:

Quarterbacks
John David Booty participated in some drills on Tuesday for the first time since breaking his fingertip in the Stanford game. Although he did not take any snaps, he did throw (with mostly good results) to receivers against the defense, wearing a glove on his throwing hand to protect his finger. The true test will come Wednesday, when Booty will find out if today’s activity caused his swelling to return (as it did the last time he tried throwing a football). As of now, Mark Sanchez remains the starter, although it is conceivable that Booty could play against Notre Dame if his finger holds up and the glove doesn’t prove to be a hindrance.

Offensive Line
Not practicing on Tuesday: OG Chilo Rachal, OT Sam Baker, OT Charles Brown, C Kris O’Dowd, OG Zack Heberer, G/T Thomas Herring. Rachal is expected to return to practice on Wednesday. Baker is still doubtful (though possible) for the Notre Dame game, with Butch Lewis set to replace him as starting left tackle. There may be some added depth in the form of Nick Howell (hernia), who was able to practice with the scout team on Tuesday. C Matt Spanos (finger) participated in practice, but coaches had him refrain from snapping, so as not to disturb the stitches still in his finger.

Linebackers
Rey Maualuga (hip) has not officially been ruled out for the Notre Dame game, but is in a great deal of pain and seems highly unlikely at this point. While he did not practice on Tuesday, Brian Cushing (ankle) did, and the latter is still on track to return against the Irish.

Others
DE Kyle Moore (knee) did not practice on Tuesday, although he is still expected to play Saturday and should return to practice on Wednesday. … RB Stafon Johnson (foot) was able to participate in some drills, but it is far from certain that he will return on Saturday. … CB Shareece Wright (hamstring) practiced for the first time in weeks and is expected to play. … CB Terrell Thomas (hamstring) did not practice, but is also expected to play Saturday. … RB Broderick Green (foot) actually participated in a portion of practice on Tuesday, although when he returns this season–if at all–is still up in the air.

Other notes

  • It appears that RB Allen Bradford isn’t actually in the coaches’ “doghouse” as some fans have feared; the coaches see him as a power back in the same role as Chauncey Washington, and Washington is simply ahead of him on the depth chart and in terms of skills and experience (especially when it comes to blocking). Thus, when Stafon Johnson went down with injury, the coaches turned to another back with a similar style (Joe McKnight) instead of Bradford.
  • Scott Wolf reports that former USC tailback Michael Coleman, who transferred to Riverside Community College after last season, hopes to return to the Trojans next year. If USC indeed wants him back, Coleman would need to improve his grades to be considered for readmission.
