USC falls in polls despite victory
If the polls are any indication, the college football world was thoroughly unimpressed with USC’s 20-13 victory over Arizona on Saturday–and with the Pac-10 in general. The Trojans dropped from 10 to 13 in today’s AP poll, and from 7 to 9 in the Harris poll and USA Today coaches’ poll. The season’s first BCS standings were also released on Sunday afternoon, and USC debuted at #14. If the season ended today, BCS #1 Ohio State would play #2 South Florida for the national championship. Thankfully, the season doesn’t end today.
If they continue to win, USC has a chance to move up in the computer rankings, at least, since the Trojans are set to face at least three ranked opponents in the coming weeks:
- After a dominating win over Washington State on Saturday, Oregon is now the highest-ranked Pac-10 team, appearing at #7 in the AP and Harris polls and #6 in the coaches’ poll. The computers weren’t as fond of the Ducks, however, and Oregon landed at #10 in the BCS standings.
- Just a few plays away from being the top-ranked team in the nation, Cal was instead punished severely by poll voters for their 3-point loss (which their regular starting quarterback missed with an injury) to Oregon State. The Bears, positioned at #12 in the BCS, were dropped eight places to #10 in the AP poll, and are at #9 in the USA Today rankings and #10 in the Harris. Cal, remember, beat Oregon earlier this season, but now find themselves behind the Ducks in the polls.
- Arizona State actually received one first-place vote in the AP and Harris polls (which is probably more indicative of voter uncertainty than of the Sun Devils’ actual place in the college football universe), and now sits at #12 in all three human polls. The Sun Devils also were the highest-ranking Pac-10 team in the BCS standings, appearing at #8.
