Sunday Notes: Carroll will stick with Booty
When asked if he would give backup quarterback Mark Sanchez a shot at starting this week in light of John David Booty’s four interception performance against Stanford, Pete Carroll seemed to have ruled out the possibility: “I’m not doing that. That’s not what I would be thinking. It’s not a one-guy deal. It’s real easy to point it all at the quarterback. I’m not going to do that.” However, Carroll could not definitively say Sunday if Booty, who sustanied a broken middle finger tip on Saturday, would be able to play this week. Booty iced his finger but it’s apparently too soon to tell if he can grip a football properly. Read on for more reflections on the Stanford game and a few injury notes.
- Carroll told the LA Times that the team’s struggles began when offensive linemen Chilo Rachal and Kris O’Dowd went down on the same play against Washington. “We were fine and something hit the fan. There’s been a big fallout and it hasn’t felt the same way since.” Rachal’s knee injury will be evaluated on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Regrding the first-half blocked extra point which turned out to be the difference in the game, snapper Will Collins pulled a hamstring in pregame warmups and Carroll suggested that it played a role because the offensive line couldn’t get proper spacing with Collins covering less ground.
- Carroll emphasized the turnover issue again Sunday: “It’s real clear that we have fallen out of line with our philosopy that has guided this program for years; we’re turning the ball over way too much.” However, he refused to put the blame for the majority of those Trojan turnovers, the interceptions, on Booty’s shoulders alone, alluding to dropped passes and the lack of a sufficent running game (which he said was hurt by missing playmaker Stafon Johnson) to balance the attack.
- Center Matt Spanos suffered a lacered hand Saturday, and Thomas Williams sprained an anke, but both are expected to play against Arizona.
