Looking ahead to Arizona
Tenth-ranked USC (4-1, 2-1) hopes to rebound from its first loss of the season–and perhaps one of the most shocking defeats in school history–when it plays host to the struggling Arizona Wildcats (2-4, 1-2) in a rare afternoon home game on Saturday at the Coliseum. The Wildcats feature a mostly one-dimensional, pass-oriented offense under new offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes, with junior quarterback Willie Tuitama throwing for 1822 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season. The Wildcats also boast the Pac-10’s top punter in Keenyn Crier (43.3 yards per punt).
In last year’s matchup between the teams in Tucson, the Trojans limited the Wildcats to a single field goal, but managed to put only 20 points on the board in their own column. USC entered halftime leading just 3-0, and relied heavily on their defense throughout the game, which held Arizona to 154 total yards and minus-16 yards rushing.
Here is USC’s official injury report, as of Sunday evening:
- PROBABLE: QB John David Booty (figner), TB Stafon Johnson (foot).
- POSSIBLE: LB Luthur Brown (shoulder), LB Brian Cushing (ankle), OG Chilo Rachal (knee), CB Shareece Wright (hamstring), OT Butch Lewis (ankle), TE Jimmy Miller (back).
- OUT: TB C.J. Gable (abdomen), WR Travon Patterson (foot), C Kristofer O’Dowd (kneecap), LB Chris Galippo (back), S-CB Josh Pinkard (knee), OG-C Nick Howell (hernia), TB Broderick Green (foot), CB Kevin Thomas (shoulder), OT Martin Coleman (shoulder), DE Trey Henderson (knee), WR Damian Williams (shoulder).
The big question mark in the above list, of course, is the status of Booty. Although coaches are indicating that he will start on Saturday, he still has to prove that he can get a good grip on the football with his fractured fingertip (which is on his throwing hand). If he is unable to play, Mark Sanchez will make his first career start.
Saturday’s game, which is sold out, starts at 12:30p and will be televised regionally by ABC. For what it’s worth, the Trojans are favored by 22 points.
