Trojans retain top ranking, pick up votes
USC’s resounding victory over Nebraska on Saturday helped the Trojans regain some of the first-place votes it lost during its idle week in the new college football rankings revealed today. The Trojans remained atop both polls for the fourth consecutive week, with 46 first-place votes (compared to last week’s 40) in the AP poll and 44 (up from 42) in USA Today’s coaches poll. Rounding out the top five in both polls were LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, and West Virginia.
Two other Pac-10 teams moved up in the rankings: Cal is now at 6th in the AP poll (8th in USA Today), while Oregon landed at 13th in each poll. Previously 11th-ranked UCLA dropped out of the top 25 after a blowout loss to Utah.
Note that next week will see the release of the season’s first Harris poll, which is one of two human-poll components (along with the USA Today survey) used to compute the BCS rankings.
