Forde: Idle USC should be #2
Seemingly holding SC’s bye week against them, ESPN’s Pat Forde has been so swept up by LSU’s two home victories against perennial doormat Mississippi State and the criminally overrated Virginia Tech that he feels the coaches and the AP voters MUST immediately make LSU #1 in this week’s polls. I’d suggest he wait 7 days until the Trojans actually play a top 100 team (which will likely require more than the first 10 pages of their playbooks) to make that judgment. And if he watched ANY games on Saturday, he’d realize that getting through Oregon, Arizona State, Washington, Cal, and UCLA will be a sufficient indicator of USC’s worth come December.

Great point Marc. Here we go again. Another season of “the tough SEC” and “the weak PAC10″ rants. I swear I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.

so says Marc, September 10th, 2007 at 2:37amI knew that the Fighting Idles of Bye Week State would somehow get us - if not on the field, certainly in the media. Since we didn’t know what type of defensive pressure the Idles would bring, our OC once again resorted to play calling that could only be described as practice-like. And don’t get me started on defense, they started off well… but lost focus… case in point, the D started hitting our own offensive guys… what’s up guys?!!!… Consolation (and probably further proof of weakness in SC’s defense), I believe Keith Rivers said sorry to Vidal Hazelton after one such hard hit.
I guess based on the above observation, I could only agree that USC has not really shown anything two weeks into the CFB season - which warrants the talk of dropping their ranking or at least losing votes to LSU (who shut down offensive juggernaut VaTech - after all, VaTech’s run offense racked up a marathon worth of rushing yards against ECU the week before), Oklahoma (the Sooners put a ton of points up against the defense of the 1980’s Miami Hurricanes), and Florida (they held the mighty Trojans (of Troy St) to less than 40). I hope that SC has a better showing against Nebraska, which incidentally moved up in the rankings after its impressive showing against Wake Forest, last year’s champion of the ACC (which we all know is almost SEC-tough), since this is their last chance to show the nation and the media that SC can play and show well against tough teams. After the Nebraska game, the remainder of SC’s schedule consists of Pac-10 patsies (including #8 Cal, #11 UCLA, #19 Oregon, #_ Washington (oh, Washington is unranked b/c they only beat Boise St at home and not Florida St.) and the tall grass at Notre Dame.
