Friday practice/injury notes: Turner returns, Johnson cautioned

Pete Carroll conducted practice Friday morning at 6:15 a.m. so that his coaches could get a jump on their recruiting and scouting trips. While only Todd McNair and Brennan Carroll left the state, many of the other coaches attended local games Friday night, including the head coach who attended the Poly-Birmingham game. Read on for a few injury updates and other notes from Friday.

  • WR Patrick Turner (stinger) returned to practice Friday, catching passes without pads or a helmet, and he should return to full practice participation on Monday in anticipation of starting against Nebraska. Carroll told the LA Daily News, “He’s going to be fine…He ran full speed out here, catching balls and running routes.”
  • RB Stafon Johnson, who rarely saw the field as a freshman because of a perceived lack of effort and the right attitude, was lectured by Pete Carroll for casually stabbing at a low pass with one hand.  Carroll used the “teachable moment” to remind Johnson (who Carroll thinks seems like “a whole new guy” this year) to avoid falling into old habits and to give max effort on every play. After practice, Johnson said, “I know what I did was wrong and it wasn’t part of my, shall we say, new character.”
  • RB Joe McKnight sat out of Friday’s practice so he could rest his sore knee, but he should be at full speed on Monday. Carroll said that McKnight has not been re-injured, and the freshman is expected to play against Nebraska.
  • Weak-side LB Kaluka Maiava, who is still recovering from a strained left hamstring, has been temporarily replaced on the second team by freshman Malcolm Smith. Maiava told the O.C. Register, “I’m going to play…I had to sit out the lats game and that just killed me. I practiced all camp for this.”
  • CB/S Josh Pinkard (knee) is still a question mark for Nebraska, but he’ll attempt to practice Monday or Tuesday. RB Chauncey Washington says his shoulder feels better, and he may return to practice early next week, but doctors have yet to clear him.
  • OL Thomas Herring moved to guard after spending most of camp at tackle because the recovering Drew Radovich and Charles Brown have done a nice job at the tackle position.
  • Freshmen Chris Gallipo, Marshall Jones, Malcolm Smith, and Marc Tyler jogged their “walk of shame” onto the practice field as all were late to the 90-minute morning workout. They were sent to Brian Kennedy Field to do punitive running, up-downs, bear clawing, and rolling in the grass. This was Tyler’s second lateness punishment in the last two days.
  • The team will take Saturday and Sunday off and will resume practice Monday afternoon.
