The Trojans practiced in half pads on Thursday afternoon, with pumped-in crowd noise to help simulate conditions during next Saturday’s contest at Nebraska. Some notes from the relatively uneventful day:

Men’s water polo team starts season ranked first

USC’s men’s water polo team begins its 2007 season on Saturday with a home contest (at McDonald’s Swim Stadium) against #12 Loyola Marymount. The Trojans enter the season ranked first in the nation after falling to Cal in last year’s national championship game, losing with just under 2 seconds left in the contest.

Davon Jefferson: a special talent

ESPN’s Andy Katz surveys those stars of the USC basketball team not named Mayo, USC’s 2008 class, and its long-term recruits, but he focuses on heralded incoming freshman Davon Jefferson. Sophomore Taj Gibon refers’s to Jefferson’s talent ceiling as “limitless”:
