Wednesday (8/29) practice/injury notes

On what has come to be known as “Turnover Wednesday,” a day on which Pete Carroll wants his players to focus on getting to the football, a casual observer could not be blamed for thinking the name refers to the personnel turnover and subsequent frantic shuffling of positions on the USC offensive line. The first domino to fall was news of the extent of center Matt Spanos’ triceps injury. Continue reading for further injury news and other practice notes from Wednesday.

  • Senior center Matt Spanos will be out several weeks (”maybe five or six” according to O-Line coach Pat Ruel) with a torn right triceps muscle - the muscle one uses to snap the football. As a result, Jeff Byers (an All-American high school center who had some snapping problems his first year at SC) moves from left guard to center. The LA Times then puts Atalini Malu at starting left guard, but Scott Wolf reports it will instead likely be Drew Radovich, who joked, “I don’t now where I’m playing.”  Freshman Kristofer O’Dowd becomes the No. 2 Center, but he can also play guard. Alex Parsons will also begin work at center because the normal No. 3 center Nick Howell will, according to the LA Times, be out for the season with hernia surgery. Carroll sums up the tumultuous offensive line situation: “Everyone is on call to play every position.”
  • WR Patrick Turner, after being banged up on Tuesday by a violent Rey Maualuga hit, practiced lightly on Wednesday. Even though his arm went numb and his “head hurt a little right after Rey hit [him],” Turner will play Saturday against Idaho.  Joe McKnight, who completed all drills on Wednesday recovering from a stretched knee ligament, has also been cleared to play against Idaho.
  • Former Trojan receiver Jamere Holland, who was recently dismissed from the team, was granted an appeal hearing before a non-athletic department committee to determine whether he may obtain his release to attend Oregon - a release which Carroll has denied. Reports conflict on when the hearing will be held. Gary Klein of the LA Times puts the hearing on Friday, but Scott Wolf is reporting that the hearing is set for September 29.
  • A 2007 football schedule poster will be distributed to fans at Saturday’s game.
