Thursday (8/23) practice roundup

Believe it or not, we’ve finally reached the point of fall training camp where Trojan fans begin thinking, “If only we had another running back.” Find out who’s out now–and what else happened during the day’s practice–in the latest installment of our daily practice roundup.

Who looked good

  • At this point, let’s consider that anybody not on the sideline being treated for injuries or aches looked good. (Oh, and John David Booty and David Ausberry–but they look good every day.)
  • Upon further review, head coach Pete Carroll also cited wide receivers Ausberry, Vidal Hazelton, Brandon Carswell, and Garrett Green as performing very well during the previous evening’s scrimmage.

Injuries and problems: Running back edition

  • As previously reported, Chauncey Washington sprained his shoulder during the Wednesday night scrimmage. He is officially listed as day-to-day, although some sources have reported that he could be out at least two weeks and could miss the Idaho game. His arm was in a sling on Thursday.
  • Joe McKnight sat out yet again on Thursday. Carroll indicated that the freshman must return to practice no later than Monday if he hopes to play in the Idaho game.
  • CJ Gable did not participate for the third straight day, although coaches indicated that he could have played if it were a game situation.
  • One of the Trojans’ few remaining healthy tailbacks, sophomore Allen Bradford, now has a sore groin. That leaves Stafon Johnson and Desmond Reed as the only fully healthy running backs on the roster. That’s a far cry from the ten tailbacks that USC had available at the start of fall camp. (Bradford’s injury, however, is considered minor.)
  • Although freshman RB Broderick Green was forced to sit out for the second consecutive day while awaiting certification from the NCAA Clearinghouse, he is expecting to finally hear on Friday whether or not he will be declared eligible for the 2007 season. The previous bullet point would suggest that Green should find his way onto the field in the Idaho game should he be deemed eligible as expected.

Injuries and problems

  • OT Charles Brown was held out of practice due to back spasms. LB Keith Rivers (sore groin) was also held out as a precaution, but should be fine. The same goes for LB Thomas Williams, who had ankle issues.
  • Also continuing to sit were S Will Harris, OT Sam Baker, FB Jordan Campbell, and WR Travon Patterson.

Also of note

  • OT Drew Radovich participated in a full practice for the first time. Carroll indicated that he has a chance to regain his starting job in time for the Idaho game.
  • According to Scott Wolf, backup FB Jody Adewale will be unable to participate in practices on Mondays or Tuesdays because of conflicts with his class schedule.
  • The team’s final two practices of fall camp are Friday and Saturday. Sunday is an off day for players, and Monday marks the start of a week of game preparation.
