Sunday (8/19) practice roundup

Sunday was a relatively uneventful day at Howard Jones Field as the Trojans returned to once-daily practices. The big news of the day came after practice, when (as previously reported) redshirt freshman WR Jamere Holland was dismissed from the team. In this report, however, we recap the day’s news from the practice field.

Who looked good

  • Chauncey Washington, C.J. Gable, and Stafon Johnson are continuing to cement their places in the main “tier” of running backs, taking virtually all of the snaps with the first team offense.
  • Sophomore WR Vidal Hazelton looked good in his second day back after sitting out several days with an injury.
  • Kicker David Buehler hit 3 of 4 field goal attempts, missing only from 47 yards.
  • Senior RB Desmond Reed, given more opportunities than normal, had a nice day running the ball.

Injuries and problems

  • DE Lawrence Jackson (shoulder) sat out for the second straight day. Others continuing to sit out with injuries were Will Harris, Joe McKnight, Michael Reardon, Marc Tyler, Travon Patterson, Hershel Dennis, Mark Sanchez, and Sam Baker. Freshman RB Broderick Green tweaked an ankle during drills but seemed fine.
  • Although he’s finally now participating in a few drills, one-time first-string OL Drew Radovich is a day or two away from returning to full practice. Head coach Pete Carroll announced that, having missed so much of fall camp, Radovich is a ”long shot” to start.
  • LB Luthur Brown also returned to practice after having missed time with an injury.
  • Backup QB Michael McDonald–working with the second team offense–was intercepted once and nearly picked off a second time. Freshman QB Aaron Corp, who was working with the scout team for the second consecutive day (and is still expected to redshirt this season barring major injuries), was intercepted twice.
  • DE Kyle Moore came very close to getting into his second fight of fall camp. After tangling with freshman Everson Griffen last week, Moore looked like he might engage offensive lineman Chilo Rachal on Sunday, until coaches stepped in the way and separated the players.

Also of note

  • OT Butch Lewis was given reps with the first team (and will continue to work out there over the next day or two) as the coaching staff continues to look for the best lineup while one-time starting tackles Radovich and Baker sit with injuries.
  • Players will move out of summer housing and into dorms (for the freshmen) and apartments (for upperclassmen) for the fall semester prior to their next practice.
  • The Trojans practice once on Monday, at 4:00 pm. It is open to the public (although Tuesday’s practice will not be).
