Monday (8/13) practice roundup

Monday’s practice, a day after a fairly ragged scrimmage at the Coliseum, featured few notable on-field highlights. Instead, the news from today’s practice is dominated by players held of football activity due to injuries and a rivalry among defensive players competing for the same job which finally went public. Read on for a recap of local coverage in our daily practice roundup.

Who looked good

  • According to Rivals, former Trojan FB Brandon Hancock declared that Chauncy Washington has the inside track to the starting tailback job. The lighter and apparently quicker Washington has impressed coaches during his limited performances during camp, including a long run on Sunday night. Allen Bradford had one of the better runs during today’s practice.
  • With the over-worked Patrick Turner taking somewhat of a diminished role today, freshman WR Ronald Johnson saw first-team snaps with David Ausberry, which could be an exciting combination during the season.

Injuries and problems

  • Updating an earlier report, QB Mark Sanchez sustained a hairline fracture in the thumb of his throwing hand during Sunday night’s scrimmage while following through on a pass to Brandon Carswell and making contact with a helmet. Doctors told Sanchez he’ll likely be out six weeks, though Sanchez predicted, “I don’t think it will be that long, but we’ll see.” Former walk-on Michael McDonald was elevated to John David Booty’s backup, but true freshman Aaron Corp, who has been impressive in camp, will get plenty of reps in the remainder of camp. Pete Carroll noted that “this is a tremendous opportunity for Corp to really step in and see how far he can take it.” Steve Sarkisian told the LA Times that he thinks the time away from competition will benefit Sanchez - being able to watch how Booty “handles situations on and off the field, whether it’s the huddle, audibles or even dealing with the media.”
  • The rivalry between defensive ends Kyle Moore (Jr.) and Everson Griffen, the heralded freshman considered overly cocky by some of his teammates, boiled to the surface during practice Monday. Griffen complained audibly about back soreness during a drill, after which Moore, according to Scott Wolf, told him to shut up, which lead to a fight between the players. The Orange Country Register added that Griffen complained that Moore hit him in the mouth during a drill. Moore compared the incident to a fight between brothers, that he was only razzing Griffen in the same way that DE Frostee Rucker teased him two years ago. “I was just messing with him a little bit, just me being the older guy telling him everybody’s out here hurting like he is…He has to suck it up and get through that, and he didn’t like that,” Moore said, who added that he and Griffen later reconciled. Senior DT Sedrick Ellis told the LA Times, “I’m sure they’ll be the best of friends by this afternoon.”
  • Defensive Lineman Trey Henderson is scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery today (Tuesday).
  • Joining LT Sam Baker (rib soreness), RB Emmanuel Moody (knee), and RB Joe McKnight (neck) on the sidelines, LB Brain Cushing (soreness) and WR Vidal Hazelton (groin) did not practice.
