Wednesday (8/8) practice roundup
Wednesday’s high-energy practice saw the arrival of three additional freshmen, a position switch, and the first full-contact action (with players in shoulder pads and helmets) since the spring. We recap the day’s coverage in our latest practice roundup installment.
Who looked good
- Placekicker David Buehler is looking better each day (and looked good enough today to merit praise from Pete Carroll), although he again missed a very short field goal. He has also been doing a solid job on kickoffs (which, as you may recall, are from the 30-yard line this season due to an NCAA rule change).
- S Will Harris, long touted by Carroll but frequently injured in his Trojan career, had enough of a big day to merit his own Rivals profile. Among his highlights were an interception and a big hit on Joe McKnight. He also fumbled and got burned for a touchdown, however.
- RB Stafon Johnson looked very good running with the ball, despite a fumble and some ill-advised ball-throwing after one play that earned a severe tongue-lashing from the head coach. And fellow back Chauncey Washington is looking faster than he was last season.
- Offensive lineman Charles Brown had yet another strong day in injured Drew Radovich’s starting spot.
- Scout was impressed with the play of a different offensive lineman: redshirt freshman Zack Heberer, who seems to be getting the hang of pass protection.
Injuries and problems
- As previously reported, the three freshmen who were waiting to hear from the NCAA Clearinghouse–Broderick Green, Brandon Carswell, and Marc Tyler–participated in practice Wednesday for the first time. While Tyler was completely cleared, the other two players were given a 14-day reprieve while the NCAA continues to review their paperwork. Assuming they are eventually ruled eligible as expected, the Trojans have no remaining players with potential eligibility problems for the fall. Carswell, by the way, looked good at receiver.
- CB Kevin Thomas, who missed most of last season with an injury, is apparently (according to at least one observer) not yet anywhere close to 100% and probably will not be so when the season starts.
- Backup LB Luther Brown apparently suffered some sort of (minor) injury during Wednesday’s session. No details were available.
- Scott Wolf reports that freshman OL Martin Coleman–who had surgery over the summer–cannot participate in contact drills for four months. He will redshirt this season.
- Radovich is expected back in action in another week and a half.
Also of note
- Wolf reports that C.J. Gable and Vincent Joseph are currently the first-string kickoff returners, although Ronald Johnson and Joe McKnight, among others, will also be given a chance there in practice. Marc Tyler even got a shot at a few returns on Wednesday. Gable, McKnight, and Johnson also practiced fielding punts.
- Little-used sophomore DL Alex Parsons has been moved to the offensive line in order to add extra depth there, reports former walk-on and Daily Trojan writer Ben Malcomson in his new (and recommended) Trojan Ticker blog, which is published by the USC athletic department. Parsons is being slotted in at left tackle for now.
- Carroll will miss Thursday’s practice sessions in order to attend the funeral for Bill Walsh. Steve Sarkisian will lead in his place.
