It’s a bit anticlimactic at this point, but USC was named the top team in the nation by the 60 coaches voting in the USA Today college football poll, which published its preseason rankings Friday morning. The top ten teams (with first-place votes in parentheses):

As part of its announcement of the preseason coaches poll, USA Today is running a lengthy profile of Trojan QB John David Booty and other recent USC quarterbacks. Says the newspaper: “USC quarterback has become the position in college football.”
