Ryan Kalil comes clean on big games
Greg Katz of WeAreSC.com recounts some of the very candid comments made by recent graduate and new Carolina Panther Ryan Kalil while giving the keynote address to a crowd of USC supporters at the Papadakis Taverna in San Pedro on Wednesday night. Regarding the 2005 victory at Notre Dame, Kalil admitted that they team was truly affected by the excessively long grass and by Notre Dame’s defense, which confused the Trojans and caused some internal disharmony on the team. He also admitted that doubt crept into his mind toward the end of the game but that offensive guard Deuce Lutui and Matt Leinart remained steadfastly positive to the end.
With respect to last season’s crushing UCLA defeat, Kalil admitted that the team practiced hard in preparation but “we didn’t have our normal edge.” The lack of fullbacks and injuries in the running game were major factors according to Kalil, making the team unacceptably one-dimensional, and he made an interesting observation on John David Booty’s performance in the noisy Rose Bowl:
We were in a hostile environment and John David (Booty) having a Southern voice, he isn’t as loud as Matt (Leinart) on the cadence.
